Gambel's Quail

By Jay Gubitz

This is the beautiful little Gambel’s Quail.  This little fellow is only eleven inches long, but he is made of 214 pieces of glass.  He utilizes six different colors of glass.  His Comparative Time Rating is 6.4.

If you have made our Rainbow Trout, you will find this Gambel’s Quail a little more of a challenge, because the smaller pieces require more attention.  But you will get a lot more satisfaction.

What does the Kit contain?  It has every important thing you need to complete this Masterpiece except the usual supplies: glass, solder, copper foil, flux, patina, or base.  Here is the contents list:

Our exclusive urethane Bodiform© that has the pattern lines carved right into it.  You will not have to paste or tape any paper patterns on it to know exactly where to position each piece of glass.

Our exclusive pattern sheets that show every pieces of glass numbered in the order that you will cut them out and position them on the form.  You will have no guesswork about which piece to cut out next.

Our exclusive template sheets that we print on self-adhesive paper for easy affixing to the glass of your choice.  You do not have to trace around them with a pen or crayon and have the lines disappear while wet grinding.

Our exclusive instruction manual that gives you step-by-step and piece-by- piece directions, leaving nothing to your imagination.

Our exclusive Leg Blok© that guides you in forming and inserting the legs into the body.  It also helps when you are making a base for your sculpture.

Our exclusive “Secrets of Stained Glass Sculpture” manual that gives you inside information about tools, materials and techniques.

Our exclusive 8 mm glass eyes that add the final touch to your sculpture.

We assume you have the usual stained glass tools, but you will also need a beveling bit (sometimes known as a lamp bit), some T-pins, some rubber bands, a pair of rubber dishwashing gloves (which you will cut down), and a three-foot length of 1/8” brass rod.  You will need two brass washers and two concave brass washers.  You will also need an electric drill.  Triangular wedges would come in handy, and the Secrets to Stained Glass Sculpture tells you how to make them easily, but you can use small blocks of wood instead.

We have always called the Gambel’s Quail the little gem of our collection.  If you can manage it – working with small pieces, that is – you will get no end of satisfaction from completing this little Masterpiece

Instruction Manual Sampler

To give you an idea of how much detail we provide to help you assemble the Gambel’s Quail, here is a reproduction of page 5 of our 11-page Instruction Manual.  (The only difference is that in the manual, the illustrations are printed in black-and-white.)

… Handle R-2 just as you did R-1.  When finished, slip it under the rubber band tight against R-1.

Solder these first two pieces together.  Using the one-handed technique (> Secrets: Soldering one-handed) apply a very light coat of 50/50 solder to the seam.  Do not let the solder go near any edge where you will have to position another piece of glass.  You will solder over all the seams later on, to give it a finished effect.

Prepare R-3, put it under the rubber band, and solder it to R-2.  Prepare R-4 and solder to R-3; prepare R-5 and solder it to R-4.  Use as many rubber bands and T-pins as is needed.

Now would be a good time to bring out the triangular wedges and other small wooden blocks.  They will come in handy to help you tilt, lift, balance, and level the form you are working on.  (> Secrets: Wedges.)

Continue to follow the numerical sequence.  You will notice that it has you completing the line of glass pieces along the right side of the top Master Seam until you get to the very back, before you get to the narrow side feathers (R-47 to R-54) of Color T.  The very long Color T tail feathers that protrude beyond the end of the body (R-104, 105 and L-104,105) will be soldered on after you have removed the Bodiform and have soldered the two sides of the body together.
