Rainbow Trout
By Jay Gubitz

THIS IS A RAINBOW TROUT. It is nineteen inches long. It weighs two pounds, eight ounces. It is hollow. It is not real! It is a life-like three-dimensional sculpture masterpiece created by Jay Gubitz.
It is
something you can make, whether you think so or not. Here is why:
When you make a sun catcher or small panel, of how many pieces of glass
does it consist? Twenty? Thirty? Forty? The Rainbow Trout consists of 221
pieces of glass. That is seven times the amount of glass of your average
thirty-piece project. So making the Rainbow Trout would take you seven times
longer to make as your average project. Ask yourself how many hours you spend
on an average 30-piece project. (Be honest with yourself.) Now multiply that
amount of time by seven. Now I will be honest with you: add on
another ten percent “fudge factor” time for a little more reading and
maybe a misstep or two, and you should come pretty close to the time it will
take you to create your own stained glass sculpture masterpiece.
The difference between making the Rainbow Trout and making your usual stained glass projects is only your TIME! And our experience!
What does our experience consist of, as far as you are concerned? We supply you with our exclusive full size Bodiform© that you can stick pins in. It has every pattern line carved into it. You do not have to tape awkward paper patterns on the form.
We supply you with paper patterns to fasten to your worktable. The pattern numbers are not random; we planned them carefully. We numbered the pieces in the order in which you will cut out and position the glass on the form! R’s and L’s distinguish between Right side and Left side glass pieces.
We supply you with template sheets printed on self-adhesive paper. When you cut out the numbered template, you take off the plain paper backing (and discard it) and affix the self-adhesive template to the glass. You do not have to trace around a paper template with a marking pen or grease crayon. You do not have to guess at where the washed-out grinding line is on the glass.
We supply an easy-to-follow, piece-by-piece instruction manual. We leave nothing to guesswork. You will know exactly when and where to place each glass-holding T-pin and rubber band. See the article that follows.
We supply our exclusive booklet, Secrets of Stained Glass Sculpture. This handy manual contains many ideas developed over the years, some new, some old, but all useful. You will learn about different techniques, materials, tools, and concepts. It will be good for you for your traditional glass art and great for your sculpture work.
We even
include the final touch: a pair of glass eyes!

Same
form, different glass
The biggest reason of all that we know you can make this Rainbow Trout is that we guarantee it! After you open the carton, look at the contents, and read the instructions, if you think you are incapable of completing the sculpture, just pack it up again in the same box and ship it back to us. We will refund the full cost of the kit! What could be fairer than that?

Start with R-1…..Put the glass piece against your beveled grinder (> Secrets: Beveled edges, why?) and shape the glass piece, leaving 1/32” still showing on the long sides. No glass has to show on the short ends.

Remove the self-adhesive template from the glass and discard the template. Round the back corners (the corners that will face toward the tail) with a 1/8” radius. Foil the glass. Put it up against the two pins on the Master Seam. Use a rubber band around the Bodiform to hold it to the Bodiform. Use some pins front and back to hold it in position. Handle R-2 just as you did R-1, and put it under the rubber band.
Solder these first two pieces (R-1 and R-2) together. Using the one-handed technique (> Secrets: Soldering one-handed) apply a very light coat of 50/50 solder to the seam. Do not let the solder go near any edge where it will interfere with positioning an adjacent piece of glass. You will solder over all the seams later, to give it a finished effect.

Finish the first row around to the bottom Master Seam, including soldering. The last piece is R-6. Put two pins on the Master Seam against R-6..

Start the second row with R-7. Put two pins on the top Master Seam between R-7 and L-7. Use another rubber band to hold the second row in position, and proceed as you did with the first row of templates. Continue to use pins to hold individual pieces in place….
